State of Care: Participatory Policymaking Using Serious Games

For Thumbi Labs, I designed both the State of Care Report and Playbook, focusing on participatory policymaking in mental health. The design ensured clarity, accessibility, and engagement through well-structured layouts, illustrations, and infographics that distilled complex policy insights into visually digestible formats.

Background

Thumbi Labs is a research and design collective that develops participatory methods to engage communities in policymaking. Their work integrates innovative tools such as serious games and interactive storytelling to make policy processes more inclusive and grounded in lived experiences.

Overview

Thumbi Labs needed a visually engaging and accessible design for two key documents: the State of Care Report, detailing the pilot and policy insights from serious games in mental health policymaking, and the State of Care Playbook, a practical guide for implementing the games. My role included structuring complex information for clarity, designing professional layouts, creating infographics, and ensuring accessibility compliance with Wellcome’s guidelines.

I developed structured layouts that ensured seamless navigation and clarity. The typography, hierarchy, and spacing were optimized to enhance readability and maintain visual coherence.

Illustration & Infographics

To effectively communicate the storytelling and simulation game processes, I designed infographics that distilled complex concepts into visually accessible formats. These visuals helped policymakers and community members quickly understand key ideas.

Print and Digital Editions

I delivered print-ready files with precise pagination, bleed settings, and color profiles. Additionally, I designed digital editions that included cross-referencing and interactive elements to improve usability across platforms.

Accessibility

Following Wellcome’s accessibility guidelines, I ensured the use of a two-column layout for better readability, implemented a clear heading structure for screen readers, maintained plain language to reduce jargon, and provided proper alt text for key images and graphics.
